Background of the study
Technological innovation has the potential to transform agricultural productivity by enhancing crop management, improving resource efficiency, and reducing post-harvest losses. In Benue State, a region known for its agricultural prowess, various technological interventions have been introduced between 2000 and 2020 to modernize farming practices. Innovations such as precision agriculture, mobile-based market information systems, and advanced irrigation techniques have contributed to improved yields and better market access for farmers (Oluwaseun, 2023). These technological advancements not only boost productivity but also enable farmers to adapt to changing climatic conditions and market demands. Despite these benefits, challenges such as limited digital literacy, inadequate infrastructural support, and high costs of technology adoption persist, hindering widespread adoption (Chinwe, 2024). Recent empirical studies indicate that when coupled with supportive policies and training programs, technological innovation can substantially increase agricultural output and sustainability (Ibrahim, 2025). This study critically appraises the influence of technological innovation on agricultural productivity in Benue State, examining both its transformative potential and the barriers to its full implementation.
Statement of the problem
Despite the promise of technological innovations, agricultural productivity in Benue State remains below its potential due to challenges in technology adoption and infrastructural inadequacies. Farmers face obstacles such as high technology costs, limited training, and poor connectivity, which diminish the positive impact of innovations (Oluwaseun, 2023; Chinwe, 2024). These constraints reduce overall productivity and limit the sector’s contribution to economic growth. The study seeks to identify the critical barriers that hinder technological integration in agriculture and propose strategies to overcome them, thereby enhancing productivity and sustainability.
